Error during '&' in database table & (internal error)

What causes this issue?

An error has occurred during the changing of database entries within
the field of "subsequent settlement".
The type of database change is &V1&. The relevant database table is
&V2&.
Possible sources of the error:

The system issues an error message and will not allow you to continue with this transaction until the error is resolved.

Database problem (probable source)
Program bug (wrong type of database change (&V1&) chosen or the entries
that are to be saved are inconsistent).
