SAP's ERP system can run on different databases, depending on the release.
SAP ECC 6.0 supports databases from multiple vendors, including Oracle, IBM and Microsoft. The latest ECC 6.0 release is Enhancement Pack 8 which also supports SAP's own HANA database.
Starting with release S/4HANA the system can only run on SAP's HANA database and no longer on any 3rd party DB.
