What is a controlling area?

The controlling area is the primary linkage between the CO (management accounting) module and FI (financial accounting) module. It is typically defined very early in the implementation of SAP and is the highest organizational element responsible for managing costs and profits. It should be noted that several company codes or a single company code can be linked to one controlling area.
